Priorities:

  • Review first draft of quantitative and qualitative survey questions (a private document as of 3/19)

Notes + Thoughts:

  • Reorganizing some of the quantitative questions: what should belong to the baseline, pre-college survey, and what questions make sense to reoccur throughout the four years?

  • Make the quantitative questions pool larger; asking about skills pertaining to:

    • genre

    • purpose

    • audience

    • context

    • voice

    • style

      • Can the writer make choices based on audience and genre?

      • Has the writers’ voice and style developed?

  • Perhaps the participant should only see 3-4 of the questions each round of surveying (students would see the same 3-4 questions during the before and after each semester)

  • Qualitative questions should capture a “moment in time”; incorporate language such as “Right now” and “Having just finished this class,” considering the participant may see the question more than once during their time in the study

Next Steps:

  • Prepare a second draft of questions per the recommendations above

  • Start preparing a social media “campaign” to advertise the study to first-years

  • Ask Messina if they have any connection to when the C/O 2025 Instagram/Facebook/social media accounts go live (and who runs them?)

  • Can Qualtrics handle the intricacies of the quantitative survey model, outlined above? (Ask Dr. Brizee or Dr. Camper)
